How to Educate Yourself Without Stepping Into a Classroom (and Possibly for Free)
By B. Dear

I am a busy guy. I spend most of my day sitting in front of a computer typing away. Although I work very hard, it has become apparent to me that my career will soon slow down quite a bit if I don't start earning some additional degrees and certifications .

I already have a bachelor's degree, that I earned before entering the workforce, but getting to the master's degree and doctorate degree are going to be a lot harder. This will take some serious study time that I just don't have with my busy lifestyle.

One day, a friend of mine invited me to take an online class in Mastering Project Management with him at Villanova University. Since we both work in this field, we approached our employer and convinced them to allow us to use our company tuition assitance to pay for the course. In return we would use the skills learned in the course to help the company and committed to stay with the company for a full year after completion. Not a bad deal at all.

The course turned our to be terrific. I have to say that it was pretty wonderful not to set foot in a classroom. Villanova provided books with powerpoint presentations from the class already in them, CDs for all of the courses were provided by mail and I was able to attend all classes, take tests, and work on all projects through my online account. The courses were self-paced, allowing me to do them in the evening while my kids worked on their homework or by burning the midnight oil and cutting out some sleep time.

If you are reading this and are short on time to continue your adult education, I highly recommend taking some sort of distance learning class and getting that degree you always wanted before it's too late.
